The Senegalese culture promotes women to give birth to more female children. Women are highly venerated in Senegalese society. They are considered as the backbone of the Senegalese society due to the many roles they play (i.e. caregivers and educators of their children). This preference for female childfren contrasts drastically from some countries like China where male children are more preferred over female children. Apparently in Senegal it is highly venerated when a woman has many daughters. This dates back to the importance of women in Islam during Mohammed's era.
Khadija, the wife of the prophet Muhammed played an important role when she encouraged her husband to return to the cave where the angel Gabriel had revealed to him the Q'ran. She was also the first person on Earth to accept Islam.
Islam also honors women whose roles have been of divine greatness and have had an impact on many people. An example they use is Mary, the mother of Jesus. She is also mentioned in the Q'ran. In fact,there is a whole chapter on women and how to respect them in the Q'ran. This is especially true for Mary in which a whole chapter is dedicated to her and the birth of Jesus.
